Do I sound like a salesman?I am a little bit. This little Dress is sooo simple to make. Perfect for a beginner, Superfast for a sewer with some skills. You could whip up 2 of these and 2 nappy/diapers in a couple hours for a great gift. Any little girl would love .
So away we go,
Supplies
2 pieces of fabric 18"x20"
2 closures (snaps ,buttons,Velcro or whatever you like!)
Embellishment if you like
Printed Template (link at the bottom of post)
This tutorial is so easy it hardly needs instructions...........
Fold one of the pieces of fabric in half . Place pattern on fold like so. Cut one ....Fabric #1.
Do the same with Fabric #2.
This is what you should have. Put the two cut outs right sides together, pin then sew a 1/4 "seam all around the dress.
Leaving a space open for turning. As I marked above.
Turn right side out and press. Make sure to turn 1/4 inch in at the opening to match up edge for top stitching.
Now it looks like this.
Top stitch all around dress very close to the edge. This will also close the opening.
Now we need to add some closures. I use snaps cuz I love 'em. Velcro would prabably work better. And buttons would be super cute ...if you feel that spunky. These photos are from the first dress I made with all one fabric. These shows where to put the closures.
Now ,on these two little dresses I added some embellishments. I applied them using fabric glue. Easy Peasy!!

I stitched a blanket stitch on felt hearts here. The hearts cover up the snap backs .

So cute! I made sundresses like that for my daughter when she was a toddler, twenty-some odd years ago! Don't get me wrong, I *love* my precious grandbaby boy to pieces, and wouldn't trade him for ANYthing, but I hope I get a granddaughter next! LOL! :)

Found you via Lori Holt and Pinterest. Love this sweet pattern. I found a vintage Gerber baby at a thrift sale, and her little outfit was not in great shape. Now, I can dress my own nearly nakey baby!

ReplyDeleteI just made a couple of these today, thank you so much for the pattern! This is sized for a 13" doll and I'm sewing for a 15" American Girl Bitty Twin (same body as their Bitty Baby if anyone is sewing for that doll) so I had to modify it a bit. I made one by the original pattern and it fit my daughters 13" baby well but the 15" doll is taller and chubbier through the chest. I couldn't print it out again so I used the slash-and-spread method to enlarge it. I cut it vertically through the armpit and spread the pattern 1/2" (3/4" might be better if you want to make it easier for little fingers to put on). I cut it horizontally through the waist and spread it 3.5" to make it knee legnth. I also legnthened the straps 1/2" but next time I plan to make it a full 1"--1/2" was just barely long enough.

I made a couple of these this afternoon, thank you so much for the pattern! I made one according to the original pattern to fit a 13" baby and then a second for my daughters 15" American Girl Bitty Twin (same body as the Bitty Baby if anyone is sewing for that doll). Bitty is taller and wider through the chest so here is how I modified the pattern, maybe it'll save someone else some fabric ;) I used the slash-and-spread method. Thank you so much for the photos and patterns. My mom made me shirts like this when I was a little girl. I have recently gotten my very first sewing machine! I was telling my daughter about this style of shirt and I wanted to make some for her for the summer. I think I am going to now make it reverseable after looking at your dress design. I thought about putting a ruffle on it but not sure how that would turn out, well that is what expermenting is all about. Thank you for the trip down memory lane, now I can show her what I was talking about. This is going to be fun!!

ReplyDeleteI have been searching forever for modern/nice patterns for my daughters little doll, I havent sewed really before so I thought this would be an ideal project - lovely step by step guide to help me along, thankyou! it all went well until I ahd to sew the press studs/snaps on how do you do this to both sides, particularly to the side you have the hearts on, surely the hearts are in the place where it would close on the other side, or am i being daft!
